Our Farm Town
Utilizing existing resource to increase our capacity to do good in our community, providing fresh food to families. Don't just virtual farm! Join us as we grow real food to feed real people in real need. Don't get me wrong, the facebook apps FarmTown and Farmville are great for building community and having a connection with other people. But what if you could do that in a living community of real people! The Church at Braden River has opperated a food pantry for many years. In the past few months, we have seen the number of people we serve increase dramatically. Every week we provide food to 40 to 60 families. The food boxes generally serve 5 to 8 meals and can help a family stretch their food budget. We want to do more, but as the economy fell off and the need rose, so did our supplies. Our hope is to supplement the dry goods that are donated and the USDA foods with fresh produce grown right on our property. It would be fantastic if we could provide two or three fresh vegetables or salad greens with each box of food staples that goes out of here. Not only would it be more food, but fresh, wholesome, unprocessed food for better nutrition! We are looking for partners to help us plant, tend and harvest a vegetable garden on the back of our property. We have a little over an acre available to cultivate and would like to sow corn, beans, squash, tomatoes, peas, cucumbers, and various leafy greens. In order to serve the greatest number of people, crops would have to be staggered to maximize the growing season and harvest time. We will need to have 3 to 5 plantings in order to have a continuous 6 to 8 week harvest. The idea would be to harvest "ripe and ready to eat" produce the day of distribution. We need all types of resources to make this work: Cultivating Equipment Seed Fertilizer Stakes Irrigation Pest Management Planters, weeders, waterers, pickers, sprayers, stakers and all sorts of laborers to tend the crop. We're not too proud, either. We know we also need a lot of know how. |
